About This Map

This map displays the indiscriminate nature of trapping and its devastating impacts across New Mexico. Incidents include trapped companion animals, trapped endangered Mexican gray wolves, illegal trapping, and encounters with trapped wildlife. Data for this map is from New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, TrapFree New Mexico incident reports, and media coverage.

Although locations are unavailable for all incidents, at least 37 endangered Mexican gray wolves have been caught in commercial/recreational traps in New Mexico since 1998.
